Exclusive Interview : An encounter with Humayun Ahmed

Humayun Ahmed is arguably the most popular Bangladeshi writer of fiction. Since the publication of his debut novel ‘Nondito Noroke’, his meteoric rise has been complimented with his success as a filmmaker. His direction for the film, ‘Aguner Poroshmoni’ won him the National Award.

You write about paranormal happenings, so do believe in the supernatural and ghosts?
I do not believe in ghosts. But the fear factor attached with supernatural elements is felt more or less by everybody. I usually write about supernatural subjects with the intention of scaring my readers!

You have been a judge on ‘Khude Gaanraaj’ but you are rumoured not be a man of music, so how was the experience for you?
Who told you that I am not a man of music? I’ve written so many lyrics and yet you are saying I am not a man of music (laughs). I may not know the technical aspects of the field but I do enjoy music. I used common sense as a judge and my wife Meher Afroz Shaon helped me. Those who took part were very talented and I had an amazing time.

Despite your popularity, many critics argue that your novels are too commercial and there is nothing to learn from your writings. Any comment?
The critics are entitled to their opinions and I don’t hold a grudge against them. I won’t be offensive in response and retaliate for anything they say.

What in your opinion is the secret of your success?
To be honest, I don’t know. If I had an answer then I would start school to teach the secrets of successful writing and share my tips with aspiring writers so people could benefit from it.

You have stated that you won’t be making any more films, after you have completed shooting ‘Ghetu Putro Kamola’, are you absolutely certain of this decision?
I don’t change my mind, once I have made a decision and so I won’t be making any films after ‘Ghetu Putro Kamola.’ I like to write but my various other commitments do exhaust me and take away from the time I candedicate to writing so I have made a conscious decision to concentrate on writing.
