Exclusive Interview : An encounter with Humayun AhmedHumayun Ahmed is arguably the most popular Bangladeshi writer of fiction. Since the publication of his debut novel ‘Nondito Noroke’, his meteoric rise has been complimented with his success as a filmmaker. His direction for the film, ‘Aguner Poroshmoni’ won him the National Award.

You have been a novelist for many years; do you ever get bored with it?
Actually whatever one does, if one enjoys doing it, then fatigue is not going to get to you. I enjoy writing and for three decades my passion for writing has not waned, so I never get bored.
How did you start out as a writer? And between writing, making films and teaching, what do you enjoy most?
I can’t recall how I got started with writing. I have taught for two decades and cherish my experience, and I do have a soft corner for this noble profession.

In the age of the Internet and e-books, do you think printed books will survive the test of time?
I think one can’t get replace the experience of reading a book from any other source. You can read a book anywhere, have it on your lap and read in bed and fall asleep. It is not possible to do so with the Internet. I think books have an edge over the Web.

Reading habits, especially among the younger generation, is said to be on the wane. What do you think can be done to encourage people to read more?
That maybe your personal opinion, I disagree with you because I believe the younger generation in our country is very interested in reading books. Books are not essential for survival unlike food so they are not compelled to purchase one, unless a reader feels like reading something then they buy it, but they can also borrow a book from someone else. It is a book’s contents that make it desirable and people want a copy. Maybe readers don’t find quality books and so fewer books are sold. The onus is on the writers and publishers to provide quality reading material that will capture readers’ attention.
What’s your opinion of the local publishing houses? Do you think they contribute in anyway towards the popularity of books and people’s reading habits?
The publishers are not in the business to serve literature and so we can’t expect them to play a positive role that will lead to the flourishing of literature, their sole purpose is to run a business. To encourage and motivate the masses needs the support of the state. The Bangla Academy can play a more significant role as well.
